April 2007 Meeting

We held our April 2007 meeting on the patio of the friendliest coffee shop
in SoCal. Even though it was Easter weekend, many members set aside an hour to show up.
The nesting season is starting a little slow based on the feedback from the many trails. Our spring has been dry and cold which may account for the delay in nestbox activity. Everyone knows within the next 30 days Southern CA will explode with bluebird nesting activity.
Bob Franz had a very interesting photo of seven eggs in one of his boxes. This clutch size is very rare for a Western Bluebird. Many members who examined the photo believe this box may be inhabited by two different species of birds. We all wait with great anticipation for Bob to report back to us on what this nestbox produces.
Linda Violett brought a container that housed her mealworm farm. She has great expertise in producing mealworms and shared with the group her system. Everyone was intrigued by her extensive knowledge and how much experimentation she went through to get her system to work. Linda believes she will save more than $400 this nesting season by raising her own mealworms.
