Anyone Seen My Eggs?

In recent discussion with several members of the club, they are puzzled by the disappearance of eggs from nestboxes. The nestboxes are monitored at least once a week. One box had five eggs that 'disappeared' from the nest without any signs of violence. The nest is completely intact and there was no debris on the ground. The bluebirds are nowhere around.

Another box had five eggs and a week later had two. The other three were gone without a trace. Again, the nest is completely intact and the remaining two are being tended too by the parents.

If you have experienced this and have some insight - please post some advice.

If eggs are disappearing from nests consider:

      1) is the hole diameter precisely 1 and 9/16 inch? If it is larger starlings can remove eggs

      2) is the nest built high so that the eggs can be reached by a bird with a long neck even though the bird can't enter the box?

      3) are two females fighting over the box? A second female might remove the eggs and build her own nest over the old
